Fashionable Friend: Kelly

Hi! I'm Kelly from Fashion or Fiction. I'm so glad to be guest-posting for Stacia while she's busy this week.

This fall, I've started wearing tights for the first time since elementary school. While I admired women who wore skirts and dresses year round thanks to the added warmth of tights, I always had a difficult time making it work. Here's what I've learned so far:

What color of tights should I choose?

If you’re looking for neutrals, black is an easy choice. Styles that have shine though, are likely to make your legs look a bit thick, so I like to stay with flat, opaque styles. However, you needn’t buy just solid black. I’ve found that dark grey tights can be worn just as easily as black. I also like black on black prints: subtle hound’s-tooth, stripes, and dots can be fun without feeling little-kiddish.

If you’re looking for color, my instinct is always to go bright or go home, thus the fire-engine red you see in this picture. However, it’s certainly not the most mature look I’ve ever worn. Darker colors are more appropriate, and easier to pull off. One caution: although mustard is very popular, it can be hard to wear this color without looking like a duck.

A final caveat: never, ever, wear white tights. You could have the best legs in the world, but white tights will make you look fat and old. Leave the white tights to the under-7 crowd, or people will think you’re wearing them to improve your circulation.

What should I wear with fun-colored tights?

In my opinion, there are only two options for adults:

1) With neutrals (as I’ve done here)
2) Monochromatically

Colored tights were a hallmark of my childhood. Back, then, I matched the tights to a color in the print of my dress, or I color-blocked. In order to avoid looking like a pre-schooler, I think adults wearing colored tights should avoid those two over-the-top methods. Instead, let the colored tights be the focus of your outfit, and balance their frivolity with more serious colors and shapes.

Alternatively, the bold could choose to wear tights that matched their dress. While I don’t know that I’d recommend this for bold reds or yellows, it can certainly work with blues, purples, and dark greens.

What kind of shoes should I wear with tights?

This issue is what kept me from wearing tights for most of my adult life, but I believe I’ve finally figured it out. Opaque tights, as opposed to sheer stockings, require a more substantial shoe to look balanced. Boots are probably your best option, but flats can work too. Feminine heels or strappy shoes usually don’t strike the right balance unless you’re trying to be avant-garde, in which case, why are you reading this anyway?

Usually, I wear black or dark tights with these black boots, because it is visually elongating. Today I took a risk contrasting my boots and tights. I’m not sure if it’s working or not, because I’ve divided up my proportions in a way that has high potential to be unflattering. Your thoughts?

How do I prevent my tights from ripping?

My tights always used to get rips in the heels and toes, but I have found a genius solution to this problem. Hue makes low-cut footies that act as socks to wear with heels. If you wear these under tights, it reduces the friction between your toenails and your shoe, preventing holes.

The other suggestion I have is to stop buying expensive tights. While I agree that quality tights last longer, there is no reason to pay $15 and up for a pair of tights. TJMAXX sells high quality tights in a range of colors and styles for $3-5 a pair. For that price, you don’t have to stress if you rip a pair.
I really love tights because they've opened up a whole new world of options in my wardrobe. How do you wear tights?

  3. Kelly has such a great style. I have yet to try tights but it is like they keep calling for me whenever I walk by them in a store. I may need to venture out of my comfort zone eventually.
